Deprivation

The 2015 Index of Multiple Deprivation combines indicators such as education, income, health and crime to measure relative deprivation in small areas in England. Lower Super Output Areas, each representing on average a population of 1,500 people, are ranked according to their performance on this index.

Devon has become marginally less deprived since 2010 when compared to the rest of the UK.

There is a noticeable north-south division with much of East Devon, Teignbridge and the South Hams being less deprived than North Devon, Torridge and West Devon.

The most deprived areas in Devon are in the wards of Ilfracombe Central and Barnstaple Central Town in North Devon and Newtown and Priory in Exeter. These four areas are in the most deprived 10% of all areas in England.

There are 39 areas that are in the 25% most deprived areas in England. Around 65,300 people live in these areas, or 8.7% of Devon’s population, up from 7.3% in 2010.

There are 24 areas in Devon in the least deprived 10% of areas nationally. The least deprived area is in Exminster in Teignbridge, which is in the least deprived 1% of areas nationally.
