The number of enterprise deaths per 1,000 of the working age population provides an indication of the rate of business failure, or downsizing, but can also be indicative of a competitive business environment. A healthy level of business churn is important because it stimulates innovation and productivity improvements. New companies also bring new, innovative products and processes to the market.
