We are all in this together

Jobseekers Allowance Analysis - December 2010

For the second consecutive month the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon, has risen from 8,215 in October to 8,660 in November representing a 5.4% increase (445 claimants). This is substantially higher than the 0.3% increase last month which equated to an increase of just 27 claimants. November Economic Briefing

For the first time in seven months the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon,
has risen from 8,188 in September to 8,215 in October representing a 0.3% increase (27 claimants). Even though this is only a slight increase this is bucking the trend seen both regionally and nationally, where JSA claimant count has continued to fall in October by 1.0% and 1.6% respectively. However, on a more positive note when compared to the same period last year there has been a substantial decrease in the number of people across Devon claiming JSA, from 9,645 claimants in October 2009 to 8,215 in October 2010, equating to an approximate 15% decrease year on year, which is higher than the percentage decrease of 10.5% seen nationally.

October Monthly Economic Update

October was perhaps one of the most widely anticipated months in the economic calendar. The much heralded Comprehensive Spending Review was unveiled, just before the quarterly economic output figures. It was the latter that was the biggest surprise. Against the expectations of most economists, the economy grew by a respectable 0.8% last quarter. By contrast the CSR delivered the anticipated 25% cuts in public spending aimed at rebalancing the fiscal deficit.
