Job Seekers Allowance Analysis - March 2011

For the fifth consecutive month the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon has risen, from 9,659 in January to 10,159 in February (500 additional claimants). This sees the rate of the working age population who are claiming JSA increase from 2.1% in January to 2.2% in February, which is still below the recent peak of 2.5% (11,499) seen in April 2009. This follows the trend seen nationally, although rates are increasing somewhat faster in Devon. On a more positive note, the JSA claimant count rate in Devon has remained below the UK and South West averages, as well as those for neighbouring areas over the past year.
