Job Seekers Allowance Analysis - June 2011

The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in May continues to fall which is particularly encouraging. This sees the claimant count fall from 9,451 in April to 8,999 in May, representing a decrease of just over 5% month on month, with rates falling steadily since they peaked in February.  The percentage of the working age population who are in receipt of this out of work benefit also dropped from 2.1% in April to 2.0% in May. This follows the trend seen nationally (UK), although rates are falling somewhat faster in Devon. In comparison with our neighbours, the rate of JSA claimants in Devon has remained below all areas and the national average for the last twelve months.
