Job Seekers Allowance Analysis - January 2012

The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) has risen from 9,829 in November to 10,194 in December, this is an increase of 365 claimants and represents a 3.7% increase from the previous month. The latest figures follow the UK trend, which has seen a 0.6% increase in the number of people claiming JSA between November and December. However, in terms of the percentage of the working age population (16-64) who are in receipt of this out of work benefit, the rate has increased from 2.1% to 2.2% in Devon and remains at 3.9% for the UK, so from this perspective, Devon is still bucking the national trend. The rate of JSA claimants also continues to remain below that of our neighbouring areas, a trend which has continued post recession.
