August 2010 – Playing the Waiting Game

For the fifth consecutive month there has been a decrease in the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon. The number of people claiming JSA fell in August to 8,269; the decrease however only represents a 0.28% decrease from the previous month showing very little change which follows the national trend. When comparing figures to the same period last year, a more positive position is shown. There has been a substantial decrease in the number of people across Devon claiming JSA, from 10,387 claimants in July 2009 to 8,269 in July 2010, equating to an approximate 20% decrease year on year, indicating the continued recovery of the Devon economy.
